1.1This practice describes a procedure for extraction of water-soluble salts and amines in crude oil for subsequent measurement by undefined analytical techniques. This practice is applicable to crude oils and is intended to provide guidance on water washing crude oil for optimal recovery of salts and amines at low concentrations possibly as low as 1 mg/kg. 1.2This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
For the last few years, amine scavengers have been added to crude in an effort to mitigate concerns and transport rules for hydrogen sulfide vapors. In anticipation of the addition of H2S thresholds in regulatory requirements in reference to UN3494, there has been a significant increase in the use of H2S scavengers. The most common scavenger used is MEA Triazine although other short chain amines have been used for this purpose. Downstrean at refineries, the H2S scavenger amines may collect in the crude tower overhead and is believed to contribute to accelerated corrosion in the crude tower and piping. Refineries can deploy existing analytical technology such as ion chromatography to speciate and quantitate the amines in the crude tower overhead water. There is currently no consistent published amine extraction method or practice from crude oil. Extraction methods vary between facilities/laboratories and can make comparison of results very difficult. This has created a need within the industry for a robust and standardized washing procedure for crude oils. Extracted salts, amines, or other water-soluble species can be subsequently measured by various analytical techniques. This approach simplifies analysis of ionic and polar species that are otherwise buried in the complex hydrocarbon matrix. The development of this practice is supported by the Canadian Crude Quality Technical Association and its membership.
