New Practice for Releasability of Fibers from Surfaces of Asbestos Cement Products by MicroVacuum and Phase Contrast Microscopy

1. Scope

oAndy Oberta presentation from last meeting was reviewed. Asbestos cement is a global issue. Concern is asbestos releasability of these products. oThe intent is that it will be a PCM method. This will be important in countries where TEM is not readily available. PCM is appropriate as all fibers released will be asbestos. oFive samples were sent to iATL and J3. All have been prepped but it is not known if they were analyzed. oThere will be a presentation at Johnson about this. Focus will be reproducibility. oOberta urged people to analyze any asbestos cement materials they have. The plan is to analyze them by both PCM and TEM. T. Bai sent around an analysis protocol. oPreliminary data is needed in order to determine the direction of the project. oWipe sampling has also been added to the scope. oA member asked what question does this try to address. Answer: primarily potential exposure during demo or renovation activities.
