New Practice for Additive Manufacturing of Metals -- Data -- File structure for in-process monitoring of powder bed fusion

1. Scope

The proposed work aims to address the gap in Process Control (PC16: In-Process Monitoring) which specifies the procedures and requirements to convert the acquired in-process data, particularly the optical and thermal data, into 3D file representing the printing process in Powder Bed Fusion.

Keywords

Additive Manufacturing (AM); In-Situ Monitoring; In-Process Monitoring; Optical Data; Thermal Data; Data Modelling; Powder Bed Fusion

Rationale

1. In-process monitoring was identified in ANSI AMSC (Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative)s roadmap at low technology readiness levels (TRL) compared to post-process non-destructive testing (NDE) methods. 2. While in-process monitoring systems are being developed to inspect quality of 3D printed parts, there is no well-established analysis method, published standard or document that specifies the procedures and requirements to convert the acquired in-process layer-wise data into 3D file structures representing the printing process. This standard establishes the procedures and requirements to convert the acquired in-process data into 3D file structures representing the printing process. The 3D file will be organized in specific structure and format to reflect the relationship between the in-process data with the printing process. The standard 3D file structure will help ensuring compatibility of data across various printing systems, analysis and illustration software. In addition, the 3D file structure aims to be self-explaining and easy-to-use to accommodate data sharing in a large bases of users. The target users for this standard include government agencies, aerospace and manufacturing companies, machine makers, service bearers and end users in metal 3D printing industry.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
