New Specification for Resin Cannabis Product Label Content and Style, Format, Location, and Prominence of Elements

1. Scope

This standard shall define the labeling specifications for resin cannabis products sold in an adult-use or medicinal-use marketplace. This standard shall define clear product categories for which these specifications apply. This standard shall not define the labeling specifications for cannabis-derived foods, dietary supplements, over-the-counter drugs, or pharmaceuticals. This standard shall not define the labeling specifications for bulk or in-process products. This standard shall apply to operators and regulatory marketplaces in North America and Europe. Updates and revisions to this standard shall occur as labeling specifications for other global marketplaces are assessed. The regional differences of labeling requirements are to be accounted for throughout the life of this standard.

Keywords

cannabis; marijuana; hemp; CBD; THC; certification; industrial hemp; text size; font requirements; display panel; container; package; label;

Rationale

While the labeling and packaging guide is a good start, it leaves a lot open to interpretation and does not outline rigorous enough criteria which can be certified against that a specification can provide. A clear delineation between adult-use labeling and medicinal-use labeling is required. Medicinal-use labeling, because of the intended use of the product, must be labeled with information that is clear and understandable for the patient, so they know exactly what they are consuming and how to consume it. Whereas, adult-use labeling should not be subject to the same level of burden. Adult-use labeling, because of the intended use of the product, must be labeled with the bare minimum information that protects/ensures product quality and consumer and environmental health and safety. All additional product information should be considered value-added content, i.e. marketing/advertising.
