Revision of D2265-20 Standard Test Method for Dropping Point of Lubricating Grease Over Wide Temperature Range

None Provided

Section 6.2.1 specifies the use of an 11C thermometer (details of this thermometer type found in ASTM E1). The maximum immersion depth of an 11C thermometer is 25mm. As far as members the subcommittee can tell most (if not all) aluminum heating blocks are designed with a 76mm deep thermometer hole - greater than the maximum depth allowed for an 11C The correct thermometer for an immersion depth of 76mm is a 3C. Prior to the publication of ASTM D2265-94a there was no specific thermometer type specified. ASTM D2265-94A is the first appearance of a specified thermometer for the aluminum block temperature and it lists an 11C. After further committee discussion and research it appears as though this is the wrong thermometer type due to the aforementioned immersion depth issue. This work item is opened to address this issue.
