New Test Methods for Determination of a 3D Perception Systems Point Wise Spatial Resolution

1. Scope

The development of standards for 3D imaging systems, which include, but are not limited to, terrestrial laser scanners (such as LiDAR), optical range cameras (such as 3D range cameras), and structured light systems. The 3D imaging systems considered may include terrestrial (static or mobile), airborne, and aquatic (surface and underwater) systems.

Thefocus is on standards for 3D imaging system specification and performance evaluation for applications that include, but are not limited to:

  • Civil and construction (e.g., surveying, infrastructure construction, structure maintenance and monitoring, mining, etc.)

  • Manufacturing in industries such as aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding (e.g., quality control, automated processes such as assembly)

  • Documentation (e.g., historic preservation, forensics, BIM – Building Information Model)

  • Terrestrial static and mobile mapping

  • Aerial systems (e.g., mapping, reconnaissance, sense and avoid)

  • Consumer electronics (e.g., facial authentication, product scanning, emojianimation)

  • Automotive (e.g., autonomous vehicles, occupancy detection, driver monitoring)

  • Robotics (e.g., collision avoidance, localization, and mapping)

The work of this Committee will be coordinated with other ASTM Committees and outside organizations having mutual interest.

Rationale

We need to devise a reproducible method to determine the smallest perceptible feature to enable comparison of different 3D perception systems. In support of this, we need to define the metric of point wise spatial resolution and define an artifact to test small steps in X, Y, and Z direction. The users of the standard will be manufacturers of 3D perception systems who want to quantify the performance of their product, as well as users of 3D perception systems who want to compare the spatial resolution performance of different systems.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
