New Practice for Determining Antiviral Efficacy of Apparel Textiles Treated with Antimicrobial Agents Intended for the Reduction of Infectious Viral Titer using a Defined SARS-CoV-2 Surrogate

1. Scope

The purview of Committee E35 is the development of standard definitions, classifications, appropriate test methods, and recommended practices relating to efficacy, safety, quality, and impact in appropriate environments of pesticides, antiseptic and antimicrobial agents, biological agents, devices, and equipment.
These activities will be coordinated with the interests of related Committees in ASTM, and with other professional and governmental organizations.

Antiviral; textile; antimicrobial

The standard is currently needed in the textile industry as no current method exists that accurately measures the ability of an apparel textile to reduce the viral load on a textile surface without altering the textile itself. This standard specifically outlines an exposure scenario currently recognized within the textile industry and uses at test system recently recommended as a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate system.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
