New Practice for Preparation of Asphalt Mixture Samples for Performance-Related Testing

1. Scope

The scope of the Committee shall be the promotion of knowledge, stimulation of research, and the development of standards pertaining to asphalt materials used in pavements, asphalt surface treatments, aggregates used in asphalt mixtures, graded aggregate used in bases or subbases, and to other materials, products, systems, and services incidental to all types of highway and transportation construction and maintenance. The types of standards developed include, but are not limited to, specifications, test methods, practices, guides, and terminology.

The work of this Committee will be coordinated with other ASTM committees and other organizations having mutual interest.
The activities shall be coordinated with other ASTM Committees when necessary.
The area of interest of the Committee is materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways, and other transportation construction.

Keywords

Sample preparation, performance or performance-related testing, aging, conditioning

Rationale

Testing lab have found that while we can perform asphalt mixture related tests with a reasonable amount of error (COV 15%) we struggle to repeat the values if the samples are not made in the same lab/same process. This standard practice will propose a uniform method for preparation, conditioning, and storage time of asphalt mixtures to reduce testing variably.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
