1. Scope 1.1 This Practice establishes an approach to the evaluation of the sustainability of single-ply roofing membranes. 1.2 This Practice includes criteria across the product life cycle from raw material extraction through manufacturing, use, and end-of-life management. 1.3 As used in this Practice, single-ply roofing membrane includes, but is not limited to, ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), ketone ethylene ester (KEE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), and polyisobutylene (PIB) products. This Practice is applicable to products manufactured in one facility or multiple facilities, one country or multiple countries. 1.4 PrinciplesThis Practice was developed based on the following important principles: 1.4.1 Life-Cycle ConsiderationThe life cycle of a product considers activities associated with the sourcing or extracting of natural resources, production and delivery of raw materials and finished product, use and maintenance of the product, and the final disposal at the end of its service life. This Practice was developed with consideration of the life-cycle stages of single-ply roofing membrane to help identify the appropriate and relevant characteristics and criteria to be used in evaluating a products environmental preferability and sustainability. 1.4.2 Relationship with LegislationA precondition for claiming conformance with this Practice shall be compliance with environmental and other relevant regulations promulgated by authorities having jurisdiction. 1.4.3 International Trade AspectsThe procedures and requirements included within this Practice are not intended to create unnecessary barriers to international trade. 1.4.4 Scientific BasisThe measurable criteria contained in this Practice were developed and selected based on sound scientific and engineering principles intended to produce accurate, reproducible results. 1.4.5 Product InnovationUse of this Practice is intended to support innovation that maintains or has the potential to improve environmental and social accountability performance. 1.5 This Practice is intended to be used by product manufacturers, suppliers, and others interested in understanding the sustainability performance of single-ply roofing membranes. Independent auditors, certification bodies, and environmental labeling organizations are also potential users of this Practice for its use in supporting market-based environmental and sustainability claims. This Practice should also be used by purchasers and consumers, including building owners and designers, who wish to ensure the accuracy of manufacturer claims relative to the sustainable nature of their products. 1.6 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalants; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.8 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of international Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
