New Practice for Aircraft Finite Element Model Verification and Validation

1. Scope

This is a new standard practice on Aircraft Finite Element Model Verification and Validation. This practice is written to be applicable for all software tools and for all complexities and types of finite element models which are validated for certification of aircraft structure.

Keywords

FEM, FEA, Finite Element Modeling, Validation, Verification

Rationale

There are currently no standards which exist that cover the acceptable methods for performing aircraft finite element model verification and validation. FAA has published some draft guidance and some training, but nothing is published which can be used by applicants for certification projects. The users are structural engineers in the aircraft industry. Once accepted by the FAA, they will use it to show compliance with the code of federal regulations to certify their products.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
