New Test Method for Test Method for Field Measurement of Electrochemical Impedance on Coatings and Linings

1. Scope

2.1 The scope of the Committee shall be the development of test methods, definitions, practices, specifications, classifications, guides, and related knowledge for:
(1) paint, varnish, lacquer, printing ink and other related coatings and materials in liquid, liquefiable, powder, or mastic form,
(2) components therof,
(3) preparation of surfaces to which such coatings are applied
(4) coating-substrate systems, and
(5) paint application tools.

Coating Capacitance, Impedance Magnitude, Bode Plot

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on coatings and linings allows for field measurement of the coating quality, which correlates to corrosion protection of the underlying structure. Field EIS test results allow for informed coating maintenance decisions, e.g., whether to replace a coating system, and may also be applicable as quality control measurement for coating contracts. This standard test method provides the experimental method needed to ensure proper application of field EIS testing and interpretation of it results.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
