1.1 This specification covers flexible, microprismatic, retroreflective sheeting intended for use on emergency vehicles, utility vehicles, and similar vehicles for chevron, Battenburg, and similar retroreflective vehicle markings used to provide enhanced daytime or nighttime visibility or both. 1.1.1 This specification provides a single-material classification to define a higher level of performance than that provided by engineer-grade sheeting. It creates a minimum performance baseline for such microprismatic retroreflective sheetings. NOTE 1---Engineer-grade sheeting is commonly defined by Specification D4956, Type I. For many vehicle applications, engineer-grade sheeting may not provide sufficient levels of retroreflection to be effective. 1.1.2 This specification is not limited to only a single microprismatic retroreflective sheeting construction. Instead, it is intended to encompass multiple sheeting constructions, including, but not limited to, both air-cell microprismatic and metalized microprismatic retroreflective sheeting constructions. 1.2 This standard is a material specification. It is not intended to function as a regulatory standard to define how such materials are to be used on a specific vehicle or for a specific application. The guidelines provided in the Appendix are intended solely for reference purposes. It is the responsibility of the user of this specification to determine the appropriate choice of materials, colors, and application patterns to meet their specific needs. 1.3 Units--The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The value stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

No such industry standard exists. This will improve visibility potential and recognition of emergency and work vehicles on our roadways and highways.
