New Test Method for a Portable Instrumented Surface Indenter for Measurement of Firmness and Stability

1. Scope

This Surface Test Method specifies a test method for determining the Firmness and Stability of ground and floor surfaces using an instrumented surface indenter.

Keywords

accessibility; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); disability; ground and floor surfacing; instrumented surface indenter; mobility device use; outdoor recreation surfacing; playground surfacing; surface accessibility standards; universal; wheelchair work test method

Rationale

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design issued by the US Department of Justice and the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards for buildings and facilities specify that ground and floor surfaces along accessible routes and at clear floor or ground spaces be firm, stable and slip resistant. Neither standard specifies how to objectively determine the firmness, stability, or slip-resistance of the surface. The following Instrumented Surface Indenter (ISI) Surface Test Method addresses the need for a means to objectively measure Firmness and Stability. This document does not address slip resistance.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
