New Test Method for Determining the Carbonyl Index of a polyolefin plastic material using Infra-Red Spectrometry (FT-IR).

1. Scope

This test method covers the determination of the carbonyl index of plastics using infra-red spectroscopy. This test method is applicable for final products, test specimens and sampled materials. This test method covers materials of various sizes and thicknesses as long as these are reported. This test method can used for both determining and comparing the carbonyl index of plastic materials that have undergone either: chemical treatment for surface modification; thermal ageing; photochemical ageing and biological degradation. The data generated can be used for the comparisons of materials.

Keywords

FT-IR; Infrared spectrometry; plastics; carbonyl index; CI; polymers.

Rationale

A standard test methodology for measuring the Carbonyl Index (also known as CI) is of need and would be very timely. There is currently no standard methodology for measuring this important index. Even in academia we have found that different groups are using different methodologies. The index is important as it has a direct link to the way a plastic material would degrade under accelerated ageing techniques, as well as its potency to biodegrade. The data obtained may be used for quality control, storage lifetimes as well as research and development of plastic materials, samples and final products. The users are quality control laboratories and services. Industrial R&D departments and the academic community looking to compare existing and novel plastic materials.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
