New Guide for Utilization of Digital Human Modeling

1. Scope

Identify and develop methods for using digital human modeling tools to understand the physiological and biomechanical effects of exoskeleton/exosuit usage on the body for static and dynamic movements and/or work activities. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Keywords

guidance; exoskeleton; exosuit

Rationale

Use of digital human modeling will accelerate the pace of safe and ergonomic design of exoskeleton/exosuit technology as well as help reduce the cost of physical device manufacturing. Ideal exoskeleton/exosuit development will utilize digital modeling tools in addition to human in the loop testing to make sure the system is consistently considering the internal influences of forces, torques, and pressures on, through, and around the body of the user.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
