New Practice for Establishing the Net Safety Benefit of Aircraft Systems

1. Scope

This Practice will provide guidance for evaluating the net safety benefit of the introduction of an aircraft system; i.e. comparing the advantages and risks associated with its installation. If there is a clear net safety benefit to presence of the system, the results of the application of this Practice may be used in justifying a simplified certification path (e.g., the use of an alternate means of compliance) in order to more efficiently introduce the safety-enhancing equipment to the field.

Keywords

safety; benefit; enhance; alternate

Rationale

The standard will provide a common means of evaluating the certification rigor required for the introduction of technology to an aircraft

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
