New Test Method for Analysis of Carbon and Other Common Elements in Low/Medium Carbon Steel and in Stainless Steel by Hand Held Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

1. Scope

The scope of the Committee includes the promotion of knowledge, stimulation of research and the development of standard specifications, test methods, practices, guides, reference radiographs, terminology, and classifications relating to nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, equipment and applications. NDT methods addressed include X-and gamma radiology, neutron
radiology, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, acoustic emission, ultrasonic, electromagnetic, leak testing, visual/optical examination, and other emerging NDT methods as may be considered appropriate by the Committee. The Committee also addresses requirements for NDT laboratory or agency quality systems, but does not develop standards for the certification of personnel performing nondestructive testing. The work of this Committee will be coordinated with other ASTM technical committees and
other national and international organizations having mutual or related interests.

Rationale

This test method is suitable for identification of unknown metals found in existing construction, scrapyard and other situations. It also may be used for manufacturing control and for verifying that the product meets specifications. It provides rapid, multi-element determinations with sufficient accuracy to assure product quality. When so equipped, determination of carbon equivalency may be measured as an indicator of metal weldability and fitness for use.
