New Practice for Volumetric Computed Tomographic (CT) Examination

1. Scope

1.1 The purpose of this practice is to establish instruction, procedures, and equipment qualification to inspect a part with volumetric computed tomography (CT). 1.2 CT may be used to disclose physical features or anomalies nondestructively within a test object by providing radiological density and geometric measurements. 1.3 CT is broadly applicable to any material or test object through which a beam of penetrating radiation passes. The principal advantage of CT is that it provides densitometric (that is, radiological density and geometry) images of thin cross sections through an object without the structural superposition in projection radiography.

Keywords

computed tomography; X-ray; digital detector array

Rationale

This will expand the use of CT beyond E1570, which covers only fan beam CT. Volumetric CT systems are starting to be used extensively in many industries.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
