New Test Method for Standard Test for Thermal Stability of Infill Material Used in Artificial Turf Sports Fields and Playgrounds

1. Scope

1.This Test Method may be used to determine the thermal stability and suitability of an infill material to be used in a given climate. It can be used for both natural and synthetic infill materials. The Test Method imparts constant heat and a cycled loading on a confined sample over a predetermined extended period of time. This test is repeated at pre-prescribed temperatures on a new samples. The sample is observed for cohesive behavior and agglomeration, and measured for percentage of remaining rebound of the heated sample at the end of the a cycled load, as compared to that of the measured height of an unheated sample using the specified dead load. 2.This Test Method is applicable for artificial turf playing field and playground infill materials. It provides a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of these materials. 3. The results of this testing shall be utilized by manufacturers and specifiers in the determination as to the stability and suitability of a material for a given climate.

Keywords

synthetic turf; resilient, impact attenuation

Rationale

1.In recent years new infill products and materials have performed poorly and or failed to perform in hot climate conditions. Over a period of time these products have begun to agglomerate and exhibited cohesive characteristics under high temperatures and applied pressure. The infill material becomes pliable and adheres to fibers. This behavior has rendered fields unusable long before their expected end of life. This Standard will provide manufacturers and specifiers a method to evaluate the stability and suitability for a given climate.
