New Practice for Standard Practice for Obstacle Course Events

1. Scope

1.1 This practice provides guidelines for design, construction, operation, inspection, and maintenance of land-based pedestrian obstacle courses by designers, owners, builders, and operators. 1.2 This practice does not apply to obstacle courses installed at military locations and operated in accord with U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) standards. 1.3 This practice does not address amusement attractions known as ropes courses or zip lines. 1.4 If attractions noted in 1.2 and 1.3 are offered as obstacles, existing ASTM International and other applicable standards shall apply. 1.5 If attractions subject to existing Committee F24 amusement ride standards are offered as obstacles, the attraction shall comply with the dedicated standard. 1.6 If standards found applicable in 1.3 and 1.4 conflict, the most stringent standard shall apply. 1.7 UnitsThe values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The Adventure based Segment of the Amusement Industry has grown exponentially over the past 3 decades. Among the flow of new offerings, Land Based Obstacle Courses have flourished in their assembly of man-made and natural obstacles to challenge the physical condition or participants. This standard is meant to remove obvious hazardous conditions by the logical application of exiting standards and model codes.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
