New Guide for Microbial Contamination and Biodeterioration in Turbine Oils and Turbine Oil Systems
1. Scope
1.1 This guide provides personnel who have a limited microbiological background with an understanding of the symptoms, occurrence, and consequences of chronic microbial contamination. The guide also suggests means for detection and control of microbial contamination in turbine oils(D4304) and turbine oil systems. 1.2 This guide is not a compilation of all of the concepts and terminology used by microbiologists, but it does provide a general understanding of microbial contamination in turbine oils. 1.3 The values in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Rationale
Although uncontrolled microbial contamination degrades turbine oils and damages turbine oil system components, industry stakeholders are generally unaware of microbiology. This guide is intended to provide stakeholders with a basic, understandable background of microbiology fundamentals and information to include microbiology in condition monitoring and root cause analysis efforts.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
