Proposed ASTM International Standard Will Evaluate Products that Remove Pollutants from Storm Water

ASTM International’s committee on precast concrete products (C27) is developing a new practice that will help measure the performance of devices placed in stormwater pipelines to help remove pollutants.

This proposed standard (WK52521, Standard Practice for the Performance Criteria for Storm Water Treatment Devices) will help measure the release of contaminants from streets, parking lots, and other structures into natural waterways.

“There are numerous ways to remove these particulates from water runoff, but there are currently no ways to evaluate the effectiveness of each of these devices,” says ASTM International member John Kurdziel, chief engineer at Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc., in Hillard, Ohio, U.S.A.

According to Kurdziel, this standard will help municipalities, design engineers, regulatory agencies, and testing laboratories.

He said that the committee is looking for more participation from municipalities, regulatory agencies, and consulting engineers to ensure their concerns are adequately addressed and to ensure that relevant information is incorporated into the practice.
