New ASTM Snowboard Standard Addresses Binding Retention and Material Durability

Snowboards that feature a single channel mounting system with removable inserts allow users to easily adjust the stance position of the bindings on their snowboards. A new ASTM International standard has now been developed that evaluates the insert retention strength of snowboards with channel-mounting systems.

ASTM F3030, Test Method for Snowboards with a Channel-Mounting System and Removable Inserts, was developed by Subcommittee F27.85 on Snowboarding, part of ASTM International Committee F27 on Snow Skiing.

According to Jeffrey Burga, testing engineer, Burton Snowboards, and secretary of F27.85, F3030 addresses the procedure to be used by test laboratories in evaluating the binding to snowboard insert retention strength specific to snowboards designed with the channel mounting system.

“ASTM F3030 will be helpful to snowboard manufacturers when comparing the durability of different types of materials used in snowboard composite construction or new designs,” says Burga.

All parties with an interest in snowboarding, particularly those with experience in manufacturing ski/snowboard products, are welcome to join in the ongoing standards developing activities of F27.85.
