Torsten Bahke, Dr.-Ing., director of the German Institute of Standardization (DIN) in Berlin, Germany, will serve a three-year term on the board of directors of ASTM International beginning in January 2009. 

The 25-person ASTM board has responsibility for directing the affairs of ASTM International, one of the largest developers of international voluntary consensus standards in the world.

Dr. Bahke earned his doctorate in engineering from Hanover University in Hanover, Germany, and the following year, he became responsible for design and project planning in materials handling for the Research and Development Department of Krupp Industrietechnik GmbH in Duisburg, Germany. He then became assistant managing director for Krupp South Africa (Pty.) Ltd. in Johannesburg, South Africa, and later returned to Duisburg as head of projects for bulk material systems at Krupp Industrietechnik. He also served as head of the executive board of directors for PHW Anlagen und Systeme GmbH, St. Ingbert, and he was a member of the executive board of directors for Krupp Fördertechnik GmbH in Essen, Germany. Dr. Bahke has been the chief executive officer of DIN since 1999 after serving as DIN director of strategy for two years.

Dr. Bahke, who holds a Dipl.-Ing. from Karlsruhe University, is a member of the boards of trustees of the Berlin-Brandenburg Section of the Association of German Engineers and of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, a member of presidial board of the Research Institute for Rationalization at RWTH Aachen University, a member of the board of the Austrian Standards Institute, a member of the board of directors of the German American Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Berlin Scientific Society. He also served as vice president, policy, for the International Organization for Standardization from 2002 to 2005.
