John T. Germaine, Sc.D., research professor in the Tufts University School of Engineering in Medford, Massachusetts, USA, will serve a three-year term on the ASTM International board of directors. 

Tufts University is a research institution with close to 12,000 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Germaine joined the Tufts faculty in 2015 where he established the Tufts Advanced Geomaterials Laboratory. He previously held several teaching and research positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). 

Germaine has over thirty-five years of experience teaching undergraduate and graduate-level materials and geotechnical courses. He specializes in experimental observation to explore geo-material behavior. 

Germaine holds a doctor of science and a master of science in geotechnical engineering from MIT, and a bachelor’s in civil engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  

A member of ASTM International since 1985, Germaine serves as the chairman of the committee on soil and rock (D18). He has also served a term of the Committee on Technical Committee Operations. He was honored with the Award of Merit, ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards, in 2008. 

In addition to ASTM International, Germaine is a member of the Society of Civil Engineers and the Geoprofessional Business Administration (GBA).
