Tribological Performance of In Situ Reinforced Al-Based Metal Matrix Composite Processed by Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract

High resistance to material damage from protecting the deterioration of the contacting surfaces is of considerable interest in the design and selection of materials for tribological applications. The present investigation concerns the study of the wear properties of iron aluminide and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) reinforced in situ metal matrix nanocomposite, fabricated by mechanical milling followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS), under fretting condition. The wear experiments were carried out in gross slip fretting conditions to investigate the wear performance of the composite against the Al2O3 balls with ambient conditions of temperature (24 ± 2°C) and humidity (50 ± 5 %).
