Chapter 13 | Surfactant Use in Petroleum and Petroleum Products

Source

This chapter describes petroleum and petroleum products and the use of surfactants either in petroleum recovery processes (e.g., drilling) or in production and refining to produce fuels and other products. Many of these processes employ water-based systems that use surfactants to produce fluids with suitable properties to facilitate them. Examples of such systems are water-based drilling fluids, acidizing and fracturing fluids, and workover and completion fluids. Surfactants are also used in the cementing of oil wells, in stimulation and enhanced oil recovery to facilitate oil production, and in refinery operations. Surfactants are also used in metalworking operations that use water-based fluids to help forge metal parts from raw metal and in formulating fuels and lubricants.
