Chapter 6 | Biosurfactants

Source

This chapter describes biosurfactants, their isolation from natural sources—more specifically from microbes, their properties, and actual and proposed uses. These surfactants are distinguished from natural surfactants, which do not occur in nature as such but are produced from natural raw materials via chemical transformations. In some applications, the performance of the two types is comparable, and biosurfactants can substitute for natural and synthetic surfactants. However, in other applications (e.g., effective drug delivery), such substitution may not be possible. Biosurfactants have a number of advantages over synthetic surfactants, which include high biodegradability, environmental compatibility, low toxicity, and high selectivity toward certain pollutants.
