Discussion on Uses of the Specification for Butanol for Gasoline Blending (ASTM D7862)

Source

ASTM D7862 establishes performance requirements and test methods for butanol content, water content, acetone content, acidity, inorganic chloride, solvent-washed gum, sulfur content, and total sulfate. This chapter discusses the specification and provides background and important points for the buyer, seller, and regulator. Butanol can be produced as a conventional, advanced, or cellulosic biofuel, depending on the feedstock used (corn, sugarcane, or lignocellulosics), which enables it to help meet various countries’ renewable fuel standards. ASTM D7862 will be used by biofuel producers, petroleum refiners, government agents, laboratories, and manufacturers of cars, marine engines, and outdoor power equipment.
