Chapter 49 | Statistical Quality Assurance of Measurement Processes for Petroleum and Petroleum Products

In a quality-conscious and cost-competitive environment, proficiency and statistical control of measurement processes used for product manufacturing and certification are expected between suppliers and customers. This chapter begins with an overview discussion of the measurement process and its general usage. Standardized test method precision and bias performance metrics adopted by ASTM D02 and associated standard practices to quantify these metrics are then discussed. Application of statistical control chart techniques and related work processes to quantify, compare, and continuously demonstrate measurement system capabilities are described. Statistical tools discussed include I, MR, EWMA control charts, histograms, and normal probability plots. The chapter concludes with outlining the key elements of a measurement process quality assurance program and important aspects of QA Program implementation.
