Chapter 5 | Biodiesel

Source

This chapter provides the user with a comprehensive overview of the biodiesel and biodiesel blend standards within ASTM. A brief overview of the current status of the biodiesel industry in the United States is followed by a comprehensive summary of the achievements of the ASTM Biodiesel Task Force since its inception in 1993. Included are the philosophies and operating principles undertaken by the Biodiesel Task Force in the development of the B100 blend stock standard, ASTM D6751, as well as that of finished blended fuel specifications for the B6–B20 product specification, ASTM D7467, and the incorporation of biodiesel blends in ASTM D975 and ASTM D396. Many of the task force efforts have set precedents that could be used by other emerging alternative fuels. A useful comparison between the properties and test methods in ASTM D975 versus those in the B100 blend stock specification and their impact on engine performance is provided, as well as the importance of test parameters that are different or take on a different interpretation from the more usual meaning in reference to hydrocarbon diesel fuel that is usually produced from petroleum.
