Chapter 19 | Passenger Car Engine Oil and Performance Testing

This chapter presents the history and present understanding of modern engine oils and the tests applied in their evaluation. Over the years, much development of technical understanding through testing has permitted improvement of engine oils and their additives to meet the needs of today's engines. In the process of such change, engine and bench tests have evolved to more closely simulate the physical and chemical environment that the engine oil must endure in its varied service to the engines used in so many different ways and environments. These tests, their development, use, and information are discussed to help in understanding engine oil–a lubricant used over the wide range of applications in which the various designs of automotive engine are employed.
