New Test Method for Determining the Free Chloride of Magnesium Oxide Panels
1. Scope
Magnesium oxychloride-based construction panels may contain some quantity of free-chloride ion that are not integral to the magnesium oxychloride binding phase. Free-chloride ion may undergo accelerated leaching from the panel and contribute to corrosion of the surrounding structure. This test method will determine the quantity of free-chloride ion not bound in the MOC cement phase. This test may also be used for determining the free-chloride of other magnesium oxide based construction panels.
Keywords
Magnesium Oxychloride; MgO Panels; Free Chlorides
Rationale
As the magnesium oxide industry continues to grow, there is no entity that is addressing the free chloride testing as of yet. ASTM test methods are routinely used for this process in industry and would be a good resource for the global market. End users, specifiers, manufacturers, and code bodies would benefit from a universal method to analyze free chlorides.
