ASTM WK91344
New Test Method for Response of Soil Under Static Loading by Shallow Foundations
1. Scope
This test method covers estimation of the bearing capacity of soil in place by means of field loading tests. This test method may be used as part of a procedure for soil investigation for foundation design. It gives information on the soil only to a depth equal to about two diameters of the bearing plate, and takes into account only part of the effect of time. Typically, the test should be conducted on a test foundation of dimensions comparable to those intended for the final design. The standard is designed to be adaptable for verifying the load capacity of a constructed footingfoundation in situations where design uncertainties arise, necessitating proof testing to confirm performance. 1.2 1.2 This standard specifies procedures for conducting static load tests on foundations to assess their load-bearing capacity and settlement behavior under applied loads. Keywords

This is being balloted as a new standard due to the extensive changes of the previous standard D1194 it is based off of, which has dropped off the books in 2003 despite its continued use and adaptation across the industry. A key revision is the updated title, which now clearly distinguishes this standard from ASTM D1196 that pertains specifically to plate load tests for pavements and earthworks. The introduction of larger foundation sizes and corresponding increases in applied loads has broadened the test’s relevance to foundation design, bearing capacity evaluation, and settlement analysis in geotechnical engineering. The expanded length is a reflection of modern expectations for technical detail, particularly for tests involving significantly higher loads, costs, and associated risks. The additional guidance and depth are necessary to support safe and reliable practice.
