Displacement Ductility of Steel Members under Axial Tension

CODEN: JTEVAB

Abstract

This paper discusses the results of an experimental investigation conducted on seven ASTM A 36 steel members subjected to axial tension. The members were chosen with various ratios of net cross-sectional area An to gross cross-sectional area Ag. The specimens were subjected to incremental axial displacement until fracture to determine the displacement ductility of each speci men. The results of this study showed that the displacement ductil ity is highly dependent on the ratio An/Ag and the geometrical shape of the member. It was also found if the ratio An/Ag is less than the specified yield stress to ultimate strength Fy/Fu, the displacement ductility will be close to 1, which means the member will fail in a brittle manner.
