The Barnacle Electrode: A Compromise Between Analysis and Experiment

The analysis for the Barnacle electrode is reviewed and presented in its contemporary aspects. The field has some exciting facets, wide variances in the calculated quantities being issued with different techniques.

The bi-electrode yields data related to the deep bulk of the metal, while the barnacle cell determines surface quantities that are orders of magnitude different. Diffusion coefficients in the case of 4340 steel differ by five orders of magnitude, and solubilities at the surface are four orders of magnitude smaller than those for the bulk.
