An Evaluation of the Effect of Low Temperatures on Mechanical Properties of a Commercial Steel to be Used in the Arctic

Abstract

The effect of low temperatures on the mechanical behavior of a commercial low-alloy high-strength age-hardenable steel, IN-787, has been evaluated. The results indicate that the steel has remarkably good properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, notch sensitivity ratio, and high cycle fatigue) in low-temperature environments. The steel retains its good mechanical characteristics even in the aged condition although there is an increase in the yield strength. It has been suggested that it would be useful to include the effect of low temperatures (at least the lowest service temperature) on the mechanical properties of materials in the codes and standards used for selecting steels for use in the Arctic.
