Crack Initiation Fracture Toughness of Transmission Line Hardware Steels

Initiation fracture toughness of some selected steels used for transmission line hardware components was measured using an AC potential drop method. The moderate upsetting due to the forging operation of the 1541 bar material increased the initiation fracture toughness by up to 27%, as compared to that of the rolled bar. Initiation fracture toughness of the oil-quenched 4140 steel increased by 60% with the decrease in hardness from Rc 40 to 28.
