Evaluating Fatigue in Crystalline Intact Rocks under Completely Reversed Loading

CODEN: GTJODJ

Abstract

Based on a fatigue testing machine common for metals, a new fatigue testing machine was developed to investigate the fatigue behavior of different rocks under completely reversed loading condition. The stress-life method was applied and the existence of the endurance limit was evaluated for three crystalline quarry stones from Iran, Natanz gabbro, Maroon marble, and Green onyx, which have different mineral compositions and grain distributions. The results indicate a similar linear trend in the variation of ultimate stress versus loading cycle number (S-N diagram) as well as the existence of the endurance limit as observed in ferrous metals. Moreover, the results illustrated that the endurance limits for all crystalline rocks of this study are obtained between 0.4 to 0.6 of their static tensile strengths. The higher fatigue resistance appeared in finer grained rocks.
