Abstract

This discussion dealt with two questions: (1) Is data from tactile sensing technologies reliable enough to consider basic conceptions of soil mechanics? and (2) Has the calibration of tactile sensing devices been rigorously approached, and is there sufficient basis to apply tactile sensing to particulate media with all the issues that it may involve, such as particle size, compliance, stiffness, stress history, and time dependence? On the face of things, it seems that the submission of El-Sekelly et al. has not included a rigorous approach.
