Mechanical Behavior of Fine-Grained Soil Reinforced by Sand Columns: An Experimental Laboratory Study

CODEN: GTJODJ

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a laboratory study of a clayey soil (kaolin) reinforced by sand columns. The work highlights the influence of the construction method on the mechanical behavior of stone columns modeled with sand. The sand columns were installed by replacement and displacement methods with or without compaction. Several columns were formed using different compaction forces during their installation. The influence of the compaction force during the construction was subsequently analyzed. Finally, reinforced soil specimens were subjected to a vertical loading to assess the influence of a compaction force on the hydro-mechanical behavior of the soil/column complex.
