Measurement of Axial Strains in Triaxial Tests on London Clay

Equipment for measuring axial strains directly on the center part of triaxial test specimens is described. The accuracy to which axial strains can be computed using this equipment is determined. The results of a series of tests on London clay provide a comparison between the axial strains computed using this equipment and conventional techniques. It is concluded that bedding problems can introduce significant errors in the determination of deformation moduli at small strains for stiff clays.
