The Bending of a Screw Plate

CODEN: GTJODJ

Abstract

The bending of a screw plate may have a considerable influence on the value of soil modulus derived from test results. This paper presents the dimensionless results of a study in which the plate is analyzed by finite elements and the soil is analyzed by integrated Boussinesq theory corrected for embedment in the medium. These results enable correction for the effect of plate bending for a range of screw plates. Such corrections may increase the derived value of modulus by 40% or more above the value obtained when a rigid plate is assumed. A correction based on the assumption that the plate is a disc is shown to be somewhat unsatisfactory.
