D13 Textiles
Event Name: January 2012 Committee Week
Pre-registration requested to attend this meeting.

A Workshop on Smart Textile Applications will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM. Sponsored by ASTM, the workshop will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, GA, in conjunction with the January standards development meetings.

ASTM International is in the process of developing a roadmap relative to potential standards development in the smart textile sector. While a standard definition may not yet be established, research indicates that smart textiles may include functional materials and/or structures that sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli, such as those from mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical, magnetic or other sources.

The area of smart textiles is extremely leading-edge and evolving at a rapid pace. This workshop is to explore the work being done using smart textiles in various applications with the objective of identifying areas where standards can support this emerging technology.

Potential Smart Textile Applications

  • Technical textiles (automotive applications, geotextiles (reinforcement of embankments or leak detection), agrotextiles (textiles for crop protection))
  • Clothing (medical applications for monitoring & treatment, military, protective clothing (i.e., thermal insulation, heat and radiation), consumer technology such as Bluetooth), security (i.e., access control, identification, GPS))
  • Home Textiles (carpets, upholstery, beds for comfort adaptation)

Online registration opens approximately 8 weeks before the workshop and closes January 25. There is no fee to attend the workshop.

Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID.
