Abstract

This practice covers the standard for the preparation of cylindrical specimens of bituminous paving mixture suitable for dynamic modulus tests. This is intended for dense-graded bituminous concrete mixtures containing aggregates. The test specimens shall be prepared with accordance to other ASTM documents prescribed herein. The procedure for preparing the cylindrical specimens using a California kneading compactor include placing the compaction mold in position in the mold holder and inserting a paper disk to cover the base plate of the mold holder. Using a variable transformer, the compactor foot is maintained sufficiently hot. Using a paddle of suitable dimensions, push the mixture into the mold. After compaction, a static load is applied to the specimen using a compression testing machine. After reaching the applied pressure as prescribed herein, the load is released immediately. After cooling, the specimen is removed from the mold and placed on a smooth flat surface.

Scope

1.1 This practice covers the preparation of cylindrical specimens of bituminous paving mixture suitable for dynamic modulus tests. The practice is intended for dense-graded bituminous concrete mixtures containing aggregate up to 25.0-mm maximum size.

1.2 The values stated in SI units are the standard.

This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
