ASTM D4543 Standard Practices for Preparing Rock Core as Cylindrical Test Specimens

About this Course

This course covers procedures for preparing rock test specimen of rock core from drill core obtained in the field or from block samples for strength and deformation testing and for determining the conformance of the test specimen dimensions with tolerances established by this practice. Cubical, rectangular, or other shapes are not covered by this practice. However, some of the information contained within this practice and in standard ASTM Test Method C170 may still be of use to preparing other test specimen shapes.

This course includes downloadable resources including a procedural outline and a pdf of the standard, instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. The course can be completed in about one hour.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Identify apparatus and related components used for preparing rock test specimen of rock core from drill core obtained in the field or from block samples, including the displacement gauge assembly.
• Define sampling and specimen requirements as outlined in ASTM D4543.
• Recognize procedure for preparing test specimens, including those for assurance of end surface parallelism and flatness.
• Recall procedure for verifying shape conformance, including those for side straightness.
• Recognize steps for determination of specimen dimensional and moisture properties.
• Define reporting requirements for ASTM D4543.
