This course covers the laboratory determination of the viscosity of oils at 150 degree C and 1 x 106 s -1 and at 100 degree C and 1 x 106 s - 1, using high shear rate tapered-plug viscometer models BE/C or BS/C.
Newtonian calibration oils are used to adjust the working gap and for calibration of the apparatus. These calibration oils cover a range from approximately 1.4 mPas to 5.9 mPas (cP) at 150 degree C and 4.2 mPas to 18.9 mPas (cP) at 100 degree C. This test method should not be used for extrapolation to higher viscosities than those of the Newtonian calibration oils used for calibration of the apparatus. If it is so used, the precision statement will no longer apply. The precision has only been determined for the viscosity range 1.48 mPas to 5.07 mPas at 150 degree C and from 4.9 mPas to 11.8 mPas at 100 degree C for the materials listed in the precision section.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Anyone who runs the D4741 test method or who needs an understanding of the test method and how it is properly run.
CEUs: .1 or 1 PDH
Certificate: A certificate is available upon successful completion of the course and an 80% or higher score on the exam.
