Math Basics for Asphalt

accredited iacet provider
Price: $115
About the Course

As construction materials testing (CMT) laboratory and/or field personnel, you are required to perform various mathematical calculations. This course will familiarize you with the formulas used to calculate various parameters of an asphalt mixture such as the percent binder and aggregate in the mixture, the moisture content, specific gravities, and percent absorption.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Module One, you will be able to:

  • Determine the area of a given surface
  • Define and calculate the spread rate
  • Calculate the percent absorption of a compacted sample
  • By the end of Module Two, you will be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between the mass and the volume of asphalt
  • Calculate the moisture content of a sample
  • Calculate the percentage of the binder content by determining the binder reading and the moisture content of the mix.
  • Calculate the bulk specific gravity of a compacted sample
  • Determine the percent absorption of a compacted sample
  • By the end of Module Three, you will be able to:

  • Determine the maximum and effective specific gravity of an asphalt mixture
  • Calculate percent air voids
  • Define batching and calculate batch weights
  • Determine the percentage of compaction for a compacted specimen
  • Audience

This course is intended for new Construction Materials Technicians who need to learn the basic math concepts applicable to testing, or as a refresher for experienced professionals.
