About the Series

ASTM's Mechanical Engineering Technician Series enables lab technicians to improve their skills through industry-leading, self-guided online training. The training courses are a key tool to supplement existing internal lab QA/QC programs.

Each course includes:
  • Self-guided training complete with video demonstrations, checklists, concept presentations, and glossaries
  • Review quiz with automatic grading
  • Certificate upon successful completion of training module

ASTM Learning Center

All ASTM online courses are available by subscription on ASTM's Learning Center. The Learning Center provides advanced features that let you set up learning plans, track learning progress and compliance, and run reports.

About the Course

These test methods cover the determination of the Rockwell hardness and the Rockwell superficial hardness of metallic materials, including test methods for the verification of machines for Rockwell hardness testing and the calibration of standardized hardness test blocks.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify principles of test and apparatus, including steps for the Rockwell Hardness test method and requirements for portable Rockwell Hardness testing machines.
  • Recognize requirements for test piece.
  • Recall Rockwell Hardness test procedures, including those for the test cycle and indentation spacing.
  • Recall when or if conversion to other hardness scales or tensile strength values are appropriate.
  • SDefine reporting requirements for ASTM E18.

Anyone who runs the E18 test method or who needs an understanding of the test method and how it is properly run.
