About the Course
This course covers the time of setting of hydraulic cement by means of the Vicat needle. Two test methods are given; Method A is the Reference Test Method using the manually operated standard Vicat apparatus, while Method B permits the use of an automatic Vicat machine that has, in accordance with the qualification requirements of this method, demonstrated acceptable performance.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the Vicat apparatus (manual and automatic) and related components used to determine the time of setting of hydraulic cement.
- Recall the conditioning requirements.
- Identify the methods for preparation of the cement paste used for the determination of the time of setting.
- Identify the steps to calculate and report the Vicat time of setting.
- Describe procedures for Test Method A using the manually operated standard Vicat apparatus and Test Method B using an automatic Vicat machine.
- Recall the performance requirement (qualification) for the automatic Vicat instrument and requirements for requalification of a method.
